In a county whose residents are 54% Black and 40% white, the District Attorney’s office should reflect these demographics in its racial and ethnic diversity.

Under current DA Amy Weirich, Black employees only make up 30% of the staff, and only 10% of attorneys.

Along with the Rev. LaSimba Gray, Councilwoman Patrice Robinson, and Councilman Jeff Warren, Steve held a press conference last week to call attention to this problem.

“This is unacceptable,” Steve said. “It has been unacceptable for years, and it needs to change.” Steve also mentioned that he has already pledged to promote diversity in hiring, recruitment and promotion if elected in August.

This press conference made waves in the Shelby County news cycle last week, and was covered by the Commercial Appeal, the Daily Memphian, and Action News 5, among other local media.
